Audiologists
Audiologists have advanced university degrees (either a Master’s or Doctorate) in Audiology, specializing in the study of hearing disorders and rehabilitation. In Ontario, Audiologists are required to be registered with the College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO). Audiologists provide comprehensive diagnostic hearing evaluations. If hearing loss is present, they will determine the type and degree of hearing impairment, and the specific treatment needed which might include prescribing and fitting hearing aids. In addition, other rehabilitation strategies might be recommended to address lifestyle needs including the use of assistive listening devices, speech reading and listening skills training or the recommendation for further medical referral through the family physician.
Hearing Instrument Specialists
Hearing Instrument Specialists are well-educated and trained to conduct a series of tests to determine if hearing loss is present and to select and fit a wide variety of hearing instruments. Hearing Instrument Specialists are registered with the Association of Hearing Instrument Practitioners (AHIP) in Ontario.

Both Audiologists and Hearing Instrument Specialists are non-physician healthcare professionals. Both of these hearing healthcare professionals are educated in the identification of potential ear diseases and disorders that require medical treatment. In such cases, patients' reports would be forwarded to their family physician and may recommend referral to an Otolaryngologist, the medical specialist who treat diseases and disorders of the ear.
