In our interview with Sonya, we talk about why she became a hearing healthcare professional, what programs are available for Ontarians when it comes to hearing health, and her favourite tip for new hearing aid wearers. Read her full interview below.

How long have you been a hearing healthcare professional?

I have been a hearing healthcare professional since 2008. I chose to get into the industry as I’m a mother of two children who are hard of hearing, and I felt that the profession was close to my heart.

What is your favourite tip for someone who is new to wearing hearing aids?

Be consistent. Wear your hearing aids for most hours during the day, every day. Make sure to come back for your follow-up appointment, so we can go over the instructions and make any necessary adjustments.

Are there any programs in Ontario that can help cover hearing aids?

Everyone with a valid OHIP card will be partially covered by the Assistive Device Program (ADP). The program covers up to a maximum of $500 per hearing aid, and ADP may provide funding for new hearing aids every 5 years or sooner under certain circumstances. If you are a senior who receives Old Age Security, you might be eligible for Ontario Works coverage.

Are Hearing Tests Covered by Ontario's Government?

Hearing tests are not covered by OHIP, however everyone older than 50 can receive a free hearing test in our hearing care centre. Also, you do not need a doctor's referral in order to receive a hearing test in our centre.

What is your favourite part of your job at Hear CANADA?

The favourite part of my job is to be able to help people hear better and improve their quality of life. The true reward from my job is a smile on a client's happy face.
